Cairngorm
Mountain has beaten 200 other resorts to win the "Golden Ski
Award" for "The Most Improved European Ski Resort"
Previous European winners include Verbier in 2000 and Mayerhofen in
2001. It was awarded by the "Good Ski Guide" effectively
the Association's Which Report on ski resorts globally. This demonstrates
that Scotland has come of age as a serious ski destination! Situated
within the Cairngorms National Park, CairnGorm offers a wide variety
of skiiable terrain. The north facing corries and slopes of CairnGorm
Mountain provide a spectacular natural landscape setting for winter
snow sports in Scotland.
The ski area is suitable for all standards and the recent funicular
railway provides quick, comfortable access to the mountaintop and
particularly the higher lying nursery slopes. You should also have
a look at the Mountain Exhibition where you will also find the Ptarmigan
Restaurant the highest in the UK! Skiing takes place in two adjoining
corries; Coire Cas and Coire na Ciste. Coire Cas offers great intermediate
runs whilst Coire na Ciste is an excellent beginners area. However,
further down Coire na Ciste the terrain becomes more demanding and
is best suited to advanced and expert skiers.

Climbing
and Hillwalking

|
The Northern
Cairngorms provide all-year-round opportunities for mountaineers.
It is for this reason that Glenmore was chosen as the site for the
National Outdoor Training Centre. The cliffs of the Northern Corries
give good rock climbing in summer and snow and ice climbing in winter
and are easily accessible from the skiers car park. The same car park
is also a good starting point for hillwalking expeditions onto the
Cairngorm plateau from where several Munros can be reached depending
on fitness and time of year. Remember many of these hills are serious
undertakings and should only be attempted by well equipped and competent
hillwalkers. Aviemore has several climbing shops for replacing essential
items that you may have lost or forgotten to bring. |

Fishing

|
The Spey is
a triumph of nature. This beautiful and prolific river is set among
some of Scotland's finest mountain and forest scenery and is one of
the four most well renowned fishing rivers in the world. Fishermen
come from all over the world to sample the prime Salmon and Sea Trout
fishing available here.
The Salmon and Sea Trout season is from 11th February to 30th September |

Fishing the Spey

|
This magnificent
and variable river rises to the west of Laggan in the Monadhliath
Mountains and travels a distance of 100 miles before it reaches the
sea at Spey Bay. However, it collects the waters from an area much
in excess of this, from tributaries, as it flows past the villages
of Newtonmore, Kingussie, Aviemore, Grantown-on-Spey, Charlestown
of Aberlour, Craigellachie, Rothes and Fochabers. It is, in fact,
the second longest river in Scotland and world-famous. As a matter
of record, it is one of the great salmon rivers. Net fishing ceased
at the end of the 1993 season and there is now no commercial netting
for salmon within the Spey district. |
